Moving a yoga retreat out onto a water is freshens up the experience and adds more fun to the gaps between yoga sessions. BIGKANU has hosted a few retreats to island locations where we use shaded beaches and island shallas for yoga or chi gong.
Part of the retreat in our case involves a little more awareness around the cuisine, which we tailor to the instructor’s designs. There are great location just off Bali on the coast of Lombok where in 9 serene southern Gili islands make the perfect setting for a retreat. Why? These islands are gentle in many ways, gentle in terms of easy access white sand beaches, gentle in terms of village life, and gentle in terms of simple beauty. For groups coming from Bali, it’s a 100minute fastboat from Serangan Harbour (near the Bali’s airport), so it is an easy access in trip and out, including door to door pickup. The instant change in vibe when leaving Bali is lovely. Let’s face it, Bali in now a mainly urban experience.
The southern Gilis have a sprinkling of restaurant options for the odd visit ashore. But if the pace needs to accelerate, the option to add in the northern Gili like Gili Air, or the island of Lembongan can add vitality to the trip. The serenity of the 9 southern Gili Islands gives the advantage of being a largely tourist free zone, so conducting a yoga class can be done in most places without interference from passers-by. It’s the right balance of nature/ ocean with proximity to Bali.
For the more adventurous nature based retreat within a yogic consciousness, the outrageous natural beauty of Raja Ampat adds a new dimension to a retreat, and combined with simple breath holding exercises around snorkelling, or freediving, Raja Ampat is a dream destination for an innovative yoga instructor. We can offer retreat space year round in Raja Ampat.
We also run the occasional trip combining surf with Yoga, and BIGKANU has a wide range of of surf destinations where surf with the combined with beach yoga/ diet would be great... Sumba, Lombok, Rote, Morotai, Sumbawa… all are on our annual surf trip calendar and can be upgraded to include yoga at an organisers request.
We have done a few all-women based retreats with some smiling success.
BIGKANU is laid out in a way that well suits the kinder conscious awareness of a groups focusing on wellbeing. We are not priced at the level of the bigger phinisi fleet, and an organiser working on a plan can budget at around $US160 per day for each person, (minimum 5, maximum 10 guests, plus instructor). An organiser can develop a course budget knowing $160 per person per night, covers all food, accommodation and, well, it is a boat, so that mean transport too*.
The boat throws in snorkelling gear, a canoe, surfboards, and SUP boards for those gaps in the days afloat. We are also a sailing boat given favourable winds.
Often simple retreats ex Bali, to the southern Gilis makes a low stress introduction to yoga-meets-relaxing holiday plan. Surf Yoga retreats can be offered in many places, generally where the waves are good but not deadly dangerous. Nature overdosing retreat will work best where nature is ripe and gorgeous, namely, Raja Ampat.
